The us apollo project sent a total of 12 people ti moon between the years 1969 -1972. First to reach the moon on 20 july,1969 were the apollo 11 astronauts,  Neil Armstrong and Edwin Eldrin. In December 1973 apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan became the last man to step on the lunar surface. Although the Americans sent nine lunar manned missions but only six landed.
